Yacht Charters
Yacht Charters are probably the easiest way to get out on
a boat in a travel destination. If you don't want to sail
your own boat to a remote location, or don't have a boat of
your own, you can still go boating at that dream location
through a yacht charter. No matter what your desitnation,
there are three fundamentally different charter options that
you will need to consider:
- Bareboat Yacht Charters
Bareboat charters are exactly what the name implies.
You are chartering a bare boat. In other words, no captain,
no crew, and no food. The boat will be provided, but you
must be a qualified sailor, and frequently at least one
able crewman is required in addition to the skipper. The
quality of bareboat charter boats can vary quite a bit,
so it is important to do your research before committing
to a boat. It goes without saying that bareboat chartering
requires the most work in terms of planning and preparation.
However, the reward of sailing into the sunset on your
"own" boat, on your own time schedule, can be
worth the extra work.
- Skippered Bareboat Charters
This type of charter involves hiring a freelance captain
to skipper your bareboat charter. You will probably be
a little closer to the action, and it will provide a great
opportunity to pick up a few sailing tips. This can also
be a good option if you are already an able sailor, but
don't know the area that you will be sailing. After getting
the lay of the land from an experienced skipper, you can
return the next year and take out the same boat on your
own.
- Crewed Yacht Charters
Crewed yacht charters are the perfect solution for those
without immense sailing skill, or for those who simply
want to relax without the burden of captaining a yacht
while on vacation. They range from just a sailboat with
a captain, to mega-yacht charters fully crewed with cooks,
etc. The benefit of a crewed charter is that anyone can
do it, and there is no need to worry about the safety
of the boat. A crewed yacht might simply be a way for
a dedicated sailor to bring in a little extra income with
the boat that they live on, or it may be a fully functional
business that pays for the operation of a mega-yacht.

you are looking for.

How can you be sure that the yacht charter broker you are
considering is reputable? There are some industry associations
that you should look for when considering a broker.
- American
Yacht Charter Association - AYCA
The AYCA was formed in 1986 as a group that is dedicated
to helping promote integrity and professionalism in
the yacht charter industry. They actively promote standardization
throughout the industry, and have a broker member list
that can be used to help verify the reputation of a
company. While 7 years of industry experience is required
for brokers to become members, its current membership
has an average of 22 years of experience. Ask the broker
you are talking to if they are a member of the American
Yacht Charter Association.
- Charter
Yacht Brokers Association - CYBA
The CYBA is another yacht charter broker organization.
While their membership requirements are not quite as
stringent as the AYCA, they are another good check that
you can perform to verify the intergrity of a charter
broker. They provide a list of members on their website
that is a quick and easy reference to use.
- Marine
Leisure Association - MLA
This UK based organization is another trade organization
that aims to protect consumers through the promotion
of higher standards and a code of conduct. They represent
charter companies around the world who adhere to their
code of ethics. As with other organizations, they maintain
a list of members accessable to would-be yacht charterers.
